I woke up this morning and realized that God had granted me another day of mercy, do I deserve this? No, not by a long shot, but He loves His children so much that He allows us this day. I look throughout the Bible and see how fortunate I really am I could be like one of the few people who were struck dead because of the sins they committed. But I have a heavenly Father that loves me regardless of my sins. He died on the cross so that we could come boldly to the throne and ask for forgiveness and He is just to forgive. Have mercy on me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. (Psalm 6:2 KJV).
When we think of the word mercy what is the first thing that comes to mind? Me personally I think of the movie Brave heart when the main character William Wallace is being executed for fighting for freedom in Scotland and halfway through the process they stop and give him a chance at mercy. The crowd so horrified by the gruesome display begins to chant “Mercy, Mercy!” This strikes me as funny considering a few moments earlier they were yelling for his death. Kind of sounds like what Jesus had to go through. Anyway to make a long story short William Wallace knew that if he took what they considered mercy that he would be giving up the freedom he fought so hard to achieve, so instead he screams “Freedom!” and dies, which changes the course of Scotland’s history because afterwards the country bands together to win their freedom from England. This shows the difference between what man considers mercy and what God does. If you paid close attention to the details of William Wallace’s chance at mercy you’ll notice that they started to torture him first then offered it up, but with God we are given mercy automatically without us having to beg for it. We rightfully deserve dead but God withholds it because He loves us that much.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8)
So today if you are reading this I want to remind you of the goodness of the Lord and employ you to take the time to thank God for His loving mercy and grace. The fact is we are not promised tomorrow, and if God shows fit that we live another day we should be moved to tears that God loved us so much that He took all of our sins: Past, Present, & Future so you could wake up every morning and experience His love so pure and unadulterated.
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)
